Near the Mine – Dustin Pickering

In silence I swept the hideous
from perfidy
and carried our bones
to the mine near the river.

My agony twisted me
and made me gentle

I sang to the dove
and cursed the choir of coal.

A diamond rests in sound
perplexity
within your weak heart,
embarrassed of its gratitude.
