(after the painting by Roberto Matta Echaurren)
It seemed so clear with no need
for interpretation or translation
from your language to mine.
from your mind to mine:
It had the clarity of the Milky Way
to the naked eye
the image of a god in clouds or stone
as it looked to us with clam-shell eyes.
the sound of a syllable inside a word
not said but understood
as if it had a meaning of its own.
It was so very clear
in the innocence of our spring
when the air was filled with birds
of hope in an amaranthine world.
