And Down the Street Was the Armory – Tyler Simnick

At a picnic
table on a
rooftop in
Brooklyn eating
Trader Joe’s
previously

frozen waffles
with peanut
butter and black
coffee with that
extra verve
you get after

sex, as if you’ve
earned it. On
the thermals
bubbling up past
us a hawk floats
heading northwest

towards Manhattan.
What a great and
terrible view
it would’ve been
that day in
September when

I overheard
my teachers
talking in
hushed tones
about a hawk
that had flown

into the
building and
couldn’t get
out.
